When your speaker needs actual repair
Sound cleaning fixes water and dust — the most common causes. But if your speaker is physically damaged, no tone will help. Signs it needs repair rather than cleaning:
- Distortion, crackling or buzzing even at low volume.
- A rattle on bass notes that cleaning doesn't change.
- No sound at all after a hard drop.
- No improvement after cleaning and drying.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I fix my speaker?
If your speaker is muffled after getting wet or dusty, play a cleaning tone with the speaker facing down — 165 Hz to eject water, or ~2,000 Hz to shake out dust. This fixes most cases in under a minute. If the sound is distorted even when clean, the speaker may be physically damaged and need repair.
Does fix my speaker actually work?
Yes, for water and dust. A low tone pushes trapped water out of the grille and a higher tone vibrates loose dust free. It cannot repair a torn or blown speaker — that needs service.
Is it safe to fix my speaker with sound?
Yes. The frequencies are the same ones your speaker reproduces during normal music, at moderate volume in short cycles. It will not harm the hardware.
How do I know if my speaker is broken or just dirty?
Dirty speakers sound muffled but clean and improve after cleaning. A broken or blown speaker sounds distorted, crackly or buzzy even at low volume and does not improve. See our dust vs. blown speaker guide to tell them apart.
