Clean your iPhone speaker
Got your iPhone wet or noticed the speaker sounding muffled? iPhones are water-resistant, not waterproof — water still gets trapped in the speaker grille. Press start below to push it out with sound.
Max your volume, then press start. Place the speaker facing down.
Works with: iPhone 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, SE and earlier.
How to clean your iPhone speaker
- Remove your iPhone case and dry the outside with a soft cloth.
- Turn the volume up with the side buttons (aim for ~90%).
- Hold the iPhone with the bottom speaker facing down over a cloth.
- Press Start Cleaning and let the 3-phase water program run.
- Wipe the grille and repeat 2–3 times until the sound is clear.
What NOT to do
- Do not use a hair dryer — heat can damage the battery and seals.
- Do not charge a wet iPhone until the Lightning/USB-C port is fully dry.
- Avoid inserting anything into the speaker mesh.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get water out of my iPhone speaker?
Play a low-frequency water-eject tone (~165 Hz) at high volume with the speaker facing down. The vibration pushes trapped water out of the grille. Repeat the program 2–3 times.
Is the water-eject sound safe for iPhone?
Yes. It uses standard frequencies your iPhone speaker already produces during music playback, at moderate volume — it will not harm the hardware.
My iPhone speaker is still muffled after water — what now?
Leave it speaker-down somewhere warm and dry for a few hours, then run the program again. If it stays distorted after a day, contact Apple Support.
