Pocket lint builds up on the mesh over months and physically blocks sound, making the phone gradually quieter.

2. Trapped water

Water after rain or a splash dampens the membrane and drops the volume until it's ejected.

3. Software settings

Volume limits, Do Not Disturb, a low media-volume slider, or an equalizer can all hold the volume down.

4. A case or audio routed to Bluetooth

How to make it loud again
