Water Damage
Water in Your Speaker After Swimming or the Shower? Do This
Took your phone in the pool, the shower, or sweated on it at the gym? The speaker sounds muffled because water — and often residue — is sitting in the grille. Here's how to clear it.
Quick answer: Wipe the outside with a damp cloth (to remove
chlorine/salt), dry it, then run the water-eject tone
speaker-down, 2–3 times. Finish with airflow.
Why pool, shower and sweat are different from rain
Fresh rainwater mostly evaporates. But chlorine, salt and sweat leave mineral residue behind as the water dries — which keeps the membrane muffled even after the water is gone. That's why these need a rinse first, not just ejection.
Step by step
- Rinse gently: wipe the speaker area with a cloth dampened in clean fresh water to lift chlorine or salt. Don't submerge or soak it.
- Dry the outside and remove the case.
- Face the speaker down and tap gently against your palm.
- Run the water-eject program at ~90% volume.
- Run the dust tone after, to shake out any dried residue.
- Air-dry speaker-down for a few hours; repeat if still muffled.
Don't: charge the phone while the port is wet, use a hair dryer,
or put it in rice. See why rice doesn't
work.
By scenario
- 🏊 Pool / sea: rinse first (chlorine/salt), then eject and dry.
- 🚿 Shower / steam: usually just moisture — eject and air-dry.
- 💪 Workout sweat: wipe down, eject, then dust tone for salt residue.
